Leonard Rose war eine ungemein bedeutende und prägende Figur der Cello-Szene des 20. Jahrhunderts. Er hat als Solist, Kammermusiker und Lehrer gleichermaßen Musikgeschichte geschrieben. Der in den USA als Kind russisch-jüdischer Einwanderer geborene Rose setzte in den 1950er-Jahren zum ganz großen internationalen Karrieresprung an und wurde zum bedeutendsten US-amerikanischen Cellisten seiner Zeit. Gleichfalls herausragend war sein pädagogisches Wirken, namentlich am Curtis Institut und an der Juilliard School. Erich Leinsdorf, Chefdirigent des Boston Symphony Orchestra, nannte die Cello-Gruppe seines Orchesters kurz »Rose Section«; ganze sieben Mitglieder der damaligen Besetzung waren Rose-Schüler gewesen. Die New York Times zählte weiter: je fünf der Cellisten im Philadelphia Orchestra und bei den New Yorker Philharmonikern sowie sechs im Cleveland Orchestra hatten durch Rose entscheidende Impulse für ihre berufliche Laufbahn erhalten. Auch Yo-Yo-Ma hatte entschieden, dass kein anderer als Rose für ihn als Lehrer infrage kommen sollte. Also tauchte der Neunjährige mit seinem Viertelcello unter dem Arm in Isaac Sterns Appartment auf, wo das Trio Stern-Istomin-Rose probte und bat darum, vorspielen zu dürfen - der Rest darf als bekannt vorausgesetzt werden. Mit dieser Box und ihren 10 Originalalben von 1945 bis 1961 sowie zahlreichen Bonustracks wird eine große Musikerpersönlichkeit gewürdigt. An seiner Seite zu hören sind musikalische Weggefährten wie Leonard Bernstein, Eugene Ormandy, Dimitri Mitropoulos, Bruno Walter, Fritz Reiner, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Isaac Stern, Bidú Sayao und Gladys Swartout.
