Following the success of the release of Weinberg’s opera The Passenger, NEOS is starting a series of Weinberg CDs/SACDs. All of the works, including symphonies, solo concertos, chamber music and his Requiem were performed at the Bregenz Festival in 2010 and recorded, so are available for this edition.

04. Symphony No. 17, Op. 137, 'Memory': IV. Andante

This is the second volume of the new NEOS Weinberg series. Weinberg felt compelled to compose to justify his survival from the Holocaust, the only member of his family to do so. His works are full of the melancholy and defiance that survival engendered.

02. Requiem, Op. 96: And Then…

06. Requiem, Op. 96: Sow the Seed

Weinberg’s Requiem, composed for soprano, boys’ choir, chorus and orchestra is a huge and complex work. This series opens a door into the incredible richness of this forgotten composer’s works. His opera, The Passenger is being performed by ENO in September and October.

Weinberg Edition, Vol. 4
01. Cello Sonata No. 2, Op. 63: I. Moderato

More performances from the Bregenz Festival 2010, continuing this interesting series. The main theme from Shostakovich’s First Cello Concerto is used in the finale of Weinberg’s Second Cello Sonata, a great expression of the friendship of the two composers. The Piano Quintet Op.18 is one of the most remarkable compositions to emerge from the Second World War.

Three Palms was written for string quartet and soprano in 1977 and uses verses by Mikhail Lermontov. The String Trio for Violin, Viola and Cello was composed in 1950 but remained unpublished for many years. The Trumpet Concerto was premiered in 1968 and contains a number of familiar quotations. Shostakovich referred to it as “a symphony for trumpet and orchestra.”
