Le pianiste présente de nombreuses pièces relatifs à l'univers de l'enfance, comme les Scènes d'enfants opus 15, Album pour la Jeunesse opus 68, ainsi que les Etudes Symphoniques, oeuvre charnière dans lart de la variation, après les variations Diabelli de Beethoven. Jan Vermeulen s'approche au plus près des indications de Schumann, se libérant des automatismes et des traditions douteuses, pour trouver l'essence même de la musique de Schumann.
