Mahaleela my journey through life
If what a person does happens to be the expression of the soul and also helps thousands experience peace, a divine peace, one feels that the purpose of his life is accomplished. That's what the world-class drummer Sivamani experiences in every breath of him.
Our legs start tapping, the body starts swaying, the heart starts pounding, our fingers begin to move and almost every part of the body gets involved. Some special feeling gushes from within and craves for expression through the body. What's up? Some percussion instrument is on the air. It is said that we grew up in the mother's womb listening to her heartbeat. Hence our heart always responds to the sound of percussion.
Here is a man who breathes drums. Drums gave life to him and in turn he added life to drums. His name is synonymous with drums across the world. From the young to the aged, everyone sways to his rhythm. He is the first Indian to have the biggest names in the business - the likes of Remo, Zildjian, Xone, Yamaha, having him as their brand ambassador and launching special series in his name. He is truly a 'where to where' story. His first stage performance was on top of a bullock cart, in a small temple festival, in the suburbs of Chennai, and today the whole world is his stage.
Music is in every cell of him. He is born for music. Siva's father was a drummer and observing him playing with drums Siva developed a passion for drums even as a child. Talent may be inborn but it is nurtured only through hard work. Practice, practice and intense practice has been the secret of Siva's success. His energy and enthusiasm set his tempo. The space between two beats is meditation for him.
Whether it is playing at concert - classical or light music, or at temple festival or for recording - for a movie or an album, whether it is playing the fusion or western or folk, Sivamani has always made a mark, an indelible mark. Every performance of his is an expression of gratitude to all his gurus and to the Almighty.
Sivamani is certainly an enigma on the beat.
