This release marks the last volume in the Chandos labels Vincent dIndy series of recordings. The project, undertaken with the Iceland Symphony and conductor Rumon Gamba, brings the neglected, eclectic and richly orchestrated works of an eminent, well-deserving representative of the late-Romantic French musical tradition and to a wider audience. Previous volumes in the series have garnered many awards, from the Grammy® nomination for V1, a Gramophone Editors Choice for V2 to a Choc de Classica for V5, confirming Chandos reputation as a top label in the groundbreaking search for neglected musical gems. DIndys Wagnerian influences are clearly highlighted both in the three interlinked symphonic overtures of Wallenstein, and in the Prelude to Act III of Fervaal, dIndys first opera, a work of Wagnerian scale and proportions, displaying the influence of Parsifal. The three remaining works on the disc were all written for small orchestras. The lightweight, sophisticated pieces of the Sérénade et Valse and the early Lied for Cello and Orchestra contrast with the five-movement Suite dans le style ancien, a work based on traditional dance forms and reflective of dIndys enthusiasm for early music. The soloist, Bryndís Halla Gylfadóttir, is the Iceland Symphonys principal cellist.
