Gilligan Moss - Gilligan Moss (2021)

This record was made over the course of three years, in a few different locations. In 2018, we did a two week retreat in upstate NY where many of the first ideas for the record were formed. We began first by listening widely & finding meeting points between our love of 70s records & dance music - both modern and early.

We spent a lot of our time in a house with open windows. We began our mornings by writing new material in two separate stations and in the evenings we would come together to play the ideas loudly into the garden. By the end of the trip, the outside & inside spaces felt continuous and our sense of location began informing a lot of the sounds and feeling of the music. Lots of flowers, tall grass & birds abound.

"Camp GilMo" became a place to test our tunes; if the wind in the trees agreed with our music, we listened & pursued the idea. We live in Brooklyn, but would steal off to Camp Gilmo at any opportunity - the process of writing and finishing was long, but it felt light and natural when we were up there in the summer, fall and winter. Imagining the world of Gilligan Moss - it's tied to nature; we often picture a colorful forested land where the creatures and fauna bop along to the music. In that respect, place plays a big part in this record & we hope it comes across.

The process wasn't a solitary or solemn lockdown, but more reminiscent of a summer camping trip. The tunes are meant to be playful in form and feeling - they all have a sense of humor about them.
