After what seems like an ethnic wind section warm up in "The Projector", it's Nic Cage's homey family life that inspires Mychael Danna's principal theme ("The House"). Like almost everything in and of the movie, this piano-led motif performs a downward spiral. We're following a journey through layers of Hollywood Hell, and no matter what we see through Cage's wide-eyes, this tragic theme demands you associate sorrow over repulsion. Danna established his style in movies such as The Ice Storm and The Sweet Hereafter, specifically his penchant for middle-Eastern and Eastern instrumentation. Seeing this as suitably off-kilter, director Joel Schumacher had him apply these textures to rock beats and make his otherwise dull investigative montages ("Missing Persons", "Hollywood") more alive. It doesn't work in the movie, where the music downplays the sordidness but sounds wildly out of place. If Danna's score is a misplaced master-stroke in the film, it makes for a great album. --Paul Tonks
