The seduction soundtrack du jour is by The Acid, which includes Aussie musician RyX, British DJ/producer Adam Freeland, and L.A.-based producer/technician Steve Nalepa (Drake, Photek, The Weeknd). The music is stark, restrained, and mysteriously beautiful in its alien-feeling landscape. Immaculately composed layers of hissing electronics (keyboards, beats), sheaths of glowing synths, and thudding, muted toms chased by snapping, crackling percussion ... how can these parts equal a languid, seductive whole? Of course, vocals have a lot to do with it. For the most part they're nearly whispered here, occasionally thickened and bolstered with backups and/or spurts of assertive suggestion. When breathy vocals are paired with an acoustic guitar (“Ra,” “Basic Instinct”) the thought of Elliott Smith looms in the air; at other moments, choruses are layered and lifted and Fleet Foxes come fleetingly to mind, though that's surrounded here by rubbery, vibrating synth notes. “Tumbling Lights” is a haunting, haunted spectacle, and “Fame” is a pulsating desire, carried on a breeze.

Combining the eclectic talents of Adam Freeland, Steve Nalepa, and Ry X, the Acid make genre-bending electronic music that's equally shadowy and engaging. The group began when the Australian X (born Ry Cuming, who also collaborates with Berlin-based producer Frank Wiedemann as Howling) got reacquainted at a Los Angeles party with Grammy-nominated Freeland, who has remixed artists ranging from the Orb to Lana Del Rey, and issued the hit single "We Want Your Soul" (as well as several other EPs and albums) in his own right. Freeland invited Cuming to join him in the studio with Nalepa, who is also a composer and professor of music technology. The free-flowing sessions resulted in four songs that the trio posted on SoundCloud in mid-2013 with little fanfare, but drew acclaim for their seamless mix of indie, dance, and R&B elements. Those songs were released early the following year as the Acid's self-titled debut EP via Infectious Records. The group's first full-length, Liminal, arrived in July 2014. In 2017, they issued the soundtrack to The Bomb.
