Boccherini’s string quintets have more to offer than the almost infamous Minuet (from G 275). The gifted Italian composer has written a huge amount of chamber music, including many string quintets for different combinations of instruments. Some of his earlier quintets for 2 violins, 1 viola and 2 celli have now been recorded by the Italian Baroque ensemble La Magnifica Comunita. The ensemble pays a lot of attention to stylistic research. All members have studied at prestigious musical institutions like the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. They play on period instruments. Since Boccherini himself was a professional cello-player he often choose for this more unusual combination with the 2 celli. His music is often a vibrant mixture of Romantic, Italian and Spanish or rather Andalusian elements. Intense performances by La Magnifica Comunitá.

The third part of the Boccherini string quintets performed by La Magnifica Communitá, containing the 6 quintets Op. 13 written in 1772. Delightful classical music which has been an example to many of Boccherini’s younger colleagues. He was one of the first to write for string quintet and the five parts are beautifully balanced. The musicians of La Magnifica Communitá research their interpretations thoroughly. They perform Boccherini’s music in a pleasantly whole-hearted way, being both down to earth and airy.

This expert group of Italian Barock musicians continues its journey through Boccherini’s greatest contribution to chamber music. He composed over a hundred string quintets, none of which will ever achieve the (deserved) fame or reputation of Schubert’s single example, but which have much to offer on their own terms: most notably a singing, melodic invention that betrays his Italian roots, as does the relatively low place accorded to counterpoint or development compared to the more strenuous inventions of his contemporary Mozart. The Op.25 set of six quintets recorded here dates from 1778, a decade after he made his decisive and profitable move to Madrid in the employ and patronage of aristocratic courts who were well pleased with the unfailingly charming, uncomplicated and urbane music he provided for their entertainment and diversion. One of his patrons had a string quartet: with Boccherini joining them as a second cellist, a genre was born, only to die a matter of decades later with Schubert.

Luigi Boccherini (1743–1805) was an exact contemporary of Josef Haydn, and knew his Austrian colleague well. He also knew the younger Mozart. Although Haydn is credited with developing the String Quartet (Boccherini was himself no slouch when it came to composing quartets), and Mozart likewise with the Quintet, it is Boccherini who can lay claim to establishing the string quintet as a major chamber music form. It is his works that influenced the masterpieces by Mozart, the solitary work by Beethoven, and most importantly, the towering example by Schubert. As a cellist, Boccherini ensured that the cello had a prominent role in the quintets (the cadenza in the trio of no.4), and especially in the almost vocal, song like writing of the slow movements. The set of six quintets on this release were published as his opus 27 in Madrid in 1779, and are representative of Boccherini at the peak of his powers – urbane, witty, perfectly crafted, graceful and suave. The listener will easily hear why he was nicknamed ‘Mrs Haydn’ by the violinist Giuseppe Puppo – his music was considered more gentle and feminine than Haydn’s.

Luigi Boccherini (1743–1805) is one of the major figures in 18th century music, and was close to both Haydn and Mozart. The young Austrian admired Boccherini’s music, and his string quintets in particular. Throughout his long career, Boccherini’s style was influenced by composers such as Nardini, Sammartini in his native Italy, Wagenseil and Monn from the Mannheim school, and forward looking composers from France such as Gossec. However, Boccherini was to base himself in Spain at the royal court, and found himself rather cut off from mainstream European musical trends. This caused him to develop his individual style – a mix of Spanish dance influences, and a smooth ‘Latin’ charm that led some commentators to remark that his music was effeminate, and in the words of one violinist Giuseppe Puppo, that he was ‘Haydn’s wife’. This is to miss the point of Boccherini’s style. Although less dramatic than either Haydn or Mozart, his music does have moments of explosive drama that appear all the more effective when bursting fortissimo from an otherwise calm movement. The harmonic shifts are also surprising and used to great effect. His music is sensuous, passionate and dramatic. The Op.39 Quintets date from 1787 when he was at the court of Friederich Wilhelm II in Berlin. These are important works that rank alongside the chamber music of his great Austrian contemporaries, and Boccherini deserves to be in their company.

A much-underrated composer, Luigi Boccherini (1743-1805) was one of the leading composers of the late 18th century, a friend and colleague of both Haydn and Mozart, and a formidable cello virtuoso. His reputation was such that he was nicknamed ‘Mrs Haydn’ – not in a pejorative sense, the appellation was due to his music sounding Haydnesque, but with a sensual, feminine grace rather than the Sturm und Drang of his Austrian friend’s music. Although his cello concerti and some of his symphonies remain in the repertoire, it is his chamber music that his reputation today rests, especially the quintets. Boccherini championed this genre, and it was his example that inspired Mozart to compose his quintets. The Op.28 set was composed in 1779 in the Spanish town of Candelada, a time when Boccherini had fallen out with King Carlos III, and was in exile, though still employed by the Infante Don Luis. They are all large-scale 4 movement works. There is much innovation here – the cross-referencing of movements in these works creates a ‘cyclical’ design. The D minor work (No.5) is a sombre foil to its fellow works, and no.2 bears the inscription ‘Della Disgrazia’ (of his disgrace), a reference to his exile. No.4 has an especially taxing cello part, and No.6 a wonderfully graceful slow movement and a brilliant folk music inspired finale.

Luigi Boccherini spent his early life in the service of the authorities of his hometown of Lucca, in Tuscany, though his talent as a cellist and composer often saw him travel abroad with his family at this young age. Settling in Spain in 1770, he spent the next 15 years of his life in the service of the Infante Luis Antonio Jaime of Bourbon. The String Quintets Op.29 for two violins, viola and two cellos were composed for the Infante in 1779 and represent a peak in Boccherini’s output, both for the magic of their texture and their great formal freedom. They remained unpublished for several years, only printed posthumously by the Parisian publisher Pleyel in 1813. The presence of dance is a common feature of the Quintets, with examples of every kind bursting out unexpectedly, even in movements where it is not openly called for. Particularly striking in this regard is Boccherini’s way of disrupting a slow movement in order to leave space for the dance to follow to the point that, in the sixth and last quintet, the slow movement is reduced to a sad Prelude before the Goyescan finale. Performing these works are I Virtuosi della Rotonda, a chamber group founded by Luigi Puxeddu in 2002, made up of soloists and leaders of major Italian orchestras. Puxeddu has already released Boccherini’s String Quintets Op.18, with La Magnifica Comunità (BC93346), and his Complete Cello Sonatas (BC93784) on Brilliant Classics. The latter, the only complete recording in existence, was named Disc of the Month by Angelo Foletto in the Italian classical music magazine Suonare News and received five Diapasons in France, as well as being critically praised in American Record Guide and Classical Voice.
After a lapse of several years this set presents the continuation of a highly successful and popular series on Brilliant Classics: the string quintets by Boccherini! The String Quintet series, of which 15 CD’s have already been issued, brought to light many hidden treasures, masterworks of chamber music in pure Classical Style, brimming with vitality, wit and winning charm. The ensemble I Virtuosi delle Rotonda are basically the same as the previous ensemble La Magnifica Comunita, only the primarius is changed: early music specialist and pioneer Federico Guglielmo, a better and stronger advocate of this delicious music is hardly imaginable…
