A world About The Swordsmen:
The Swordsmen are Eddie Anderson and Roymond Thompson.
They have known each other since they were children in Cleveland, Ohio, Cleveland is Eddie’s hometown, and Ray used to spend his summer vacations there visiting a brother.
Eddie’s musical studies began when 11. In addition to private lessons, he also had lessons at the Cleveland Music School Settlement House in 1954. At the same time he appeared in dramatic and operatic productions at The Karamu Theatre.
An illness prevented Eddie From accepting various music scholarships to college, though he did continue his private music studies after he left high school. He attended Western Reserve for a year and also took courses at Lewis Business College in Detroit.
Eddie was a member of the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus and the Cleveland Chamber Orchestra Chorus which was directed by Robert Shaw. He also sang with the Calas Festival Chorus in San Juan. Eddie has long made a hobby of collecting all kinds of records.
Ray’s hometown is Beckley, West Virginia, where he attended school until he was 13. He then moved to Washington to live with relatives and finished high school there.
After high school, Ray moved to Cleveland, where he sang with a gospel group and became a soloist for various churches in the area. He was at the Cleveland Institute of Music for a year and also took courses at John Carroll University. In his spare time Ray likes to compose music.
Eddie and Ray’s first musical association was with a gospel quintet when they were youngsters. They also sang together as members of The Cleveland Male Choral in 1962. They attended the same church and were soloists with the church choir. Before they joint professional career, Eddie worked in nightclubs in New York State, Detroit in Cleveland and environs.
The duo was brought to the attention of Nina Simone. Miss Simone heard some demos they had made and soon afterwards Eddie and Ray had a brand new recording contract and a new professional name - The Swordsmen.
The Swordsman's first record, On My Soul, was an immediate hit, and the duo was launched on a recording career.
The Swordsmen are very special. As you listen to this record you’ll find out why.
