Modern country music, as we know it, had its beginning in national popularlity in 1927 when Ralph Peer with portable recording equipment, ventured to Bristol, Virginia, and recorded Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter family. The family at that time, consisted of A.P. and Sarah Carter, and A.P.'s sister-in-law, Maybelle, who was the very young wife of E.J. Carter, A.P.'s brother. For the past few years (1972), Maybelle, Helen, June, and Anita have been regular performers with Johnny Cash on his personal appearances and television shows.
