Bach revised his 'Johannes-Passion' regularly: he returned to it over a period of 26 years, from 1724 until his death. It is the version hallowed by tradition, established by the Kantor a year before his death, that is presented on these CDs. However, the 1725 version, equally outstanding musically, has also been recorded complete and can be downloaded as a bonus in high-resolution sound. Comparison of the two versions reveals the underlying meaning of this matchless 'Passion'.

BBC MUSIC MAGAZINE CHORAL & SONG CHOICE Performance: ***** Recording: ***** 'Complete clarity of sound purpose distinguish Rene Jacobs s recording of the St John Passion ... Jacobs s tempos are fleet and the attack is clean and tender. Evangelist Werner Gura sings with authority ... the chorales are most notable for their weight and solemnity.' Anna Picard BBC Music Magazine, June 2016 ------------- **** 'a powerful and individual reading of the 1724 St John Passion.' --Nicholas Kenyon The Observer, 3rd April 2016

BBC RADIO 3 RECORD REVIEW DISC OF THE WEEK 'It s a beautifully recorded version' --Andrew McGregor BBC Radio 3 Record Review, 19th March 2016

SUNDAY TIMES ALBUM OF THE WEEK In 1724, when the St John Passion was first performed, it was Bach s largest composition to date in terms of forces. Jacobs detects a sense of despair in his pleas to his employers for extra resources, citing the composer s insistence to the Leipzig council in requiring 'at least 12 singers' (four Konzertisten, or soloists, and eight Ripienisten, or choristers) for performing 'well appointed church music'. The Belgian conductor follows the recent tradition of one voice to a part, which some contemporary musicologists claim to have been the norm for the Thomaskantor s own performances. In addition to his four 'concertists' the soprano Sunhae Im, the alto Benno Schachtner, the tenor Sebastian Kohlhepp and the bass Johannes Weisser, who sings both Christus and the arias he has a ripieno group of 16 for the turba chorus, as well as the Staats- und Domchor Berlin for the 'congregational' chorales. The results are predictably dramatic, and the narrative is gripping thanks to Werner Güra s commanding interpretation of the Evangelist. --Hugh Canning The Sunday Times, 17th April 2016
