Frederick « Toots » Hibbert est un des pères du reggae. Au même titre que Jimmy Cliff ou Bob Marley, il transforme le ska et le rocksteady en un genre nouveau. Un de ses titres, « Do the Reggay », voit pour la première fois l'utilisation du terme « reggae ». Ce père n'est pas exemplaire, son amour invétéré de la marijuana lui vaut d'écrire « 54-46, That's My Number » qui relate son séjour en prison pour possession de la douce substance. Toots est un personnage flamboyant, son influence déborde encore aujourd'hui les frontières du simple reggae « roots ». On doit à ce groupe fondateur connu pour ses prestations publiques quelques albums de poids, notamment Funky Kingston (1973) et un double Live (1980). D'une longévité exemplaire, le groupe, éloigné de la scène pendant trois ans, est de retour en 2016.
