By the artist’s own admission, Spill Kid, the new album from Harley Alexander, can be consumed and processed as a hopefully-useful document of “processing sexual-trauma” and “the space that opens up after the crying, despair, rage, and self hatred” or simply as a nice soundtrack to having a bath. While these polar-opposites might not make too much sense on paper, the significance of both of these endorsements is readily apparent when investigating Alexander’s latest work; an eight-track collection that drifts beautifully while also feeling weighted by a palpably sombre sense of circumstance and experience.
Set it as background music and Spill Kid is a gorgeous haze, the classical guitar Alexander used to record the album lending the whole thing a haloed brightness that juxtaposes the sentiments buried within. It’s important, however, that such sentiments aren’t restricted only to white-noise and while the direct reflections and references are both nuanced and somewhat vague, song-titled such as ‘Slay (The Patriarchy)’ ensures that the message stays as a relevant aspect of the conversation.
Album’s will always fall or flourish upon the strength of their songs, however, and in that respect Spill Kid is a beautiful success, Alexander sounding as compelling as ever, fashioning an immersive sense of time and place with just his voice and that aforementioned classical guitar, which he traipsed around various Canadian spots with while crafting the new album.
While the whole thing feels tenderly balanced, ‘Sometimes It’s Good’ is an immediate stand-out, Alexander’s solemn voice sharing various truth’s about the world and its ways: “forgetful that you were taught sometimes it’s good
and sometimes it’s not” he’s sings over wavering instrumentation, while ‘I Learned To Shout’ is one of the record’s most skeletal moments, the sense of loss for something, someone, so tangible you almost feel like you could shape it in to visions of your own past if you concentrated hard enough; “This longing vacancy seems to be
a long lost strangers history.”
Released today, via Sports Day Records, Spill Kid is a heavy undertaking but also one that’s absolutely worth the time and exploration. It’s streaming below right now, and we’ll allow Alexander himself to have the final word:
