Rachel Grimes is a composer and pianist who creates music for chamber ensembles, orchestras, film, and collaborative live performances. Her work has been performed by the Louisville Orchestra, Kansas City Symphony, Knoxville Symphony, A Far Cry, Longleash, and the Dublin Guitar Quartet, among others. She is a member of King’s Daughters & Sons and a primary composer of the ground-breaking chamber group, Rachel’s (Quarterstick/ Touch & Go).
This Temporary Residence Ltd. digital release includes five instrumental versions of compositions from her most recent recording, The Way Forth, a lushly orchestrated folk opera which retraces generations of Kentucky history through women’s voices (released on Temporary Residence Ltd. in November 2019). With featured performances by Timbre Cierpke (harp), Scott Moore (violin), Nathan Salsburg (guitar), Sean Johnson (banjo), and Grimes on piano, these mixes reveal the deep emotional core of the work, and foreground the orchestrations with striking immediacy.
Inspired by a treasure-trove of family documents, photos, and letters, The Way Forth probes vexing questions that came to the surface while researching these people, places, and events, and discovers alongside a counter-narrative of the exploitation of people and natural resources that marks Kentucky’s history, and, ultimately, the expansion of America.
