Effigy: Poison and the City (Nic Raine)
MovieScore Media ventures into the city of mid 19th century Bremen with the guidance of composer Nic Raine and his orchestral and largely romantic, highly melodic music for Effigy – Poison and the City. Based on a true story (as well as a stage play by Peer Meter), the film tells the story of Gesche Gottfried (Suzan Anbeh), one of the first female serial killers who put away 15 people using her usual method of Arsenic poisoning. She intends to raise those numbers, but when she faces off pioneering female investigator Cato Böhmer (Elisa Thiemann), the poisoner of Bremen seems to have met her match. Nic Raine’s score was nominated for best music awards at the Flathead Lake International Cinemafest and the Cyprus International Film Festival.

“I was very happy to be associated with this film for several reasons,“ explains Nic Raine about the project. “It is director Udo Flohr’s first film produced on a small budget and filmed in the part of Germany where I live. Friends of mine were involved in the locations and set design and my wife, Jana Raine, wrote the end title song lyrics and performed it so the creative process was a bit like family. I chose to write the score in a period style with a modern twist and have used a large string orchestra with all the emotional possibilities that are available with that combination.”

Nic Raine started his career as an orchestrator, working most prominently with the legendary John Barry (A View to a Kill, The Living Daylights). Since then, he has become one of the busiest arrangers of classic film music as well as the conductor of hundreds of film music concerts all across Europe and beyond, including countless James Bond concerts based on his own arrangements originally done for the Prague Philharmonic. For collectors of classic film music, he is best known for his reconstructions and conducting of great scores like El Cid, Conan the Barbarian, Ben-Hur and most recently King of Kings. As a composer, he has primarily worked in German cinema and television of which his music for Die Spionin (2013) was released by MovieScore Media.
