The Colombian band Bomba Estéreo carved out a signature electro-cumbia sound on pulsating hits such as “Fuego” and “Soy Yo,” with throbbing beats and production as colorful as pyrotechnics. But the group, whose members include Li Saumet and Simón Mejía, has shown its subtle side, too, on songs such as “Mar (Lo Que Siento).” It’s these understated moments that inform Mejía’s solo effort “Mirla,” released under the name Monte. Guided by ambient samples he collected in the Amazon, Mejía weaves recordings of trickling rivers and choirs of birds into soft charanga melodies and careful synths, building fragile, barely there downbeats. Some songs are restless, almost eager to burst into the off-the-wall energy he has harnessed alongside Saumet; Mejía’s focus, however, is on the discreet tension and melody that live in the natural world.
