In the prog universe, Magma have concentrated a lot of energy (more than 150 musicians have gravitated around the band) without a plethoric or disproportionate discography. The fault is a collapse of several years and an almost maniacal sense of perfectionism of the leader/drummer Christian Vander. With K.A. (2004), Magma came back by making something new with something old, more precisely by finalizing incomplete compositions or only performed on stage. After the very short Félicité Thösz (2012), Rïah Sahïlaahk (2014) and Šlaǧ Tanƶ (2015), the band is back with Zëss (which means “Master” in Kobaïen), a suite composed in the 70s and partly performed live (in Bourges in 1979 and Le Triton in the video Mythes et Légendes : Epok IV released in 2005). So, for the group’s 50th anniversary, Christian Vander has put the work back to work by composing, in particular, a last movement that has been absent until now.
From the outset, Zëss proved to be a particular work in Magma’s discography: very symphonic, with the presence of the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, the absence of Christian Vander behind the drums (replaced by Morgan Agren) and the declamation of a long poem in French (!) by the Vander himself. By dealing with nothingness and time in the setting of an ancient stadium, the album focuses on a few notes, atmospheres that recall the composer’s prevalent influences (Carl Orff, Richard Wagner and John Coltrane) to transform them into a quasi-texture style. An indescribable work, as often, with its repetitive lines and improvisations, the climax is slow to hit us in the sixth part.
So yes, Zëss – Le jour du Néant deals with the end of everything and Vander wondered if a “real” continuation to the band would be possible. Clever, the idea of a dream will emerge to distract him from this fatal eventuality. Good news for lovers of a Magma always valiant and conquering so much the album is a success that will have taken its time without making us lose it.
