Notable for putting the music first, Marie Vermeulin has always delighted piano connoisseurs and has embarked on a dazzling career. Her playing, notably when interpreting the complete Douze Etudes of 1915, lifts Debussy above any supposed impressionist languor, in a modern reading of supple lines, attacks, colors and resonances. “The music then takes on the appearance of a strange operation, in which the fingers should multiply…” In writing this, Debussy was probably dreaming of the agility, at once virtuoso, poetic and clear, that this young artist demonstrates, dazzling us equally in the suite of three pieces Pour le piano (1901) and the three Estampes (1903).
