An unquiet artist. That’s how Antonio Carlos Santos de Freitas, or simply Carlinhos Brown may be considered. Born in 1962, in the Candeal neighborhood in Salvador, Brown is seen as one of the most creative and innovating artists of Brazil’s current musical scenery. With multiple facets, Brown stands out as a singer, musician, producer, composer, arranger, cultural agitator and a coach in the popular Brazilians TV Shows “The Voice Brasil” and “The Voice Brasil Kids”.
Besides the music, Carlinhos Brown has been dedicating himself to develop his visual arts sensibility. For the past five years, Brown searches to express himself through his paintings. His art has already been exposed in the Castro Alves Theater and A Tarde Neswpaper Foyers’, bot exhibitions in Salvador. His first official exhibition “Olhar Que Ouve” (Eyes That Listen), has already been presented at Caixa Cultural Brasília and the Palácio do Planalto (Brazilian Government’s Official Office), with the presence of the Minister of Culture and Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff.
But what really internationally projected him was the percussion that has a special place in the intrinsic mosaic of the artist’s natural skills. From Mestre Pintado’s lessons, Brown launches himself to professionalization. He has worked at WR Studios where he learned recording techniques and participated at the Band Acordes Verdes with Luiz Caldas, which projected Bahia’s musicality nationally. Still in the 80’s, Brown took part on Caetano Veloso’s Band during the tour “Estrangeiro” as a percussionist. It was trough Veloso’s voice that Brown had one of his compositions acknowledged nationally; “Meia Lua Inteira” brought the sound inspired in the Capoeira coteries and was part of the famous soap opera “Tieta”.
At the end of the 80’s, Brown began one of his most successful projects of his career. Rediscovering and reinventing the “Timbaus” sonority he united dozens of percussionists and created the Timbalada that currently has Denny Dean as his lead singer. Carlinhos Brown also stands out for the amount of songs that became number one hits in the voice of many of the major Brazilian artists and other recorded by himself in many of his albums. Great names like Maria Bethânia, Gal Costa, Caetano Veloso, Marisa Monte, Nando Reis, Cassia Eller, Herbert Vianna and even the heavy metal band Sepultura have record Brown’s songs.
