"One thing I do feel grateful for in the landscape of music now is how many different lanes there are for people to exist," songwriter, producer and artist Fred Gibson tells Apple Music. "We're more open to artists being different things." The South Londoner better known as Fred again., cut his teeth in music's fast lane. He's written hits for Ed Sheeran, Clean Bandit, George Ezra and Stormzy, aided the evolution of Headie One on the duo's GANG EP and in February 2020 became the youngest-ever recipient of the Producer of the Year BRIT Award. Actual Life is his first solo project, a deeply personal EP that takes instruction from sets of either intimate or wilfully obscure recordings and bends them into evocative moments full of both dance-floor-inspired euphoria and melancholy. It's also a project spurred on by Brian Eno, Gibson's mentor since his teens. "As I get older, I'm more and more appreciative of how much he can help me with music," he says. "Brian exists in his own world. He's this Gandalf-like figure, able to exist outside of the realms of normality. And by some sort of strange serendipity, around last year when I wanted to get back into making this, he messaged me, with no context and having not spoken for a few weeks: 'All right, Fred. It's time. You need to go back to your lab and do some you. Don't only work with other people."' And obviously, when Eno speaks, you listen. Take a guided tour on this startling EP with Fred himself.
