Valhalla Rising is a feature film by Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive, Only God Forgives) released in 2009. The highly visual film tells the story of One Eye (Mads Mikkelsen), a mute warrior of supernatural strength, who, in the year 1000 AD, travels with the help of a boy slave a journey into the heart of darkness.

I generally use music as inspiration for coming up with the story and designing the elements of my films. However, on VALHALLA RISING, the idea came to me without the use of music. It had been on my mind since I was ten-years-old after my mother read me a science fiction story from an obscure 1950’s novel. The book was about a father and son who travel to the moon in a spaceship. When they arrive, they find a human coffin hidden in one of the moon’s many caves. I could never remember what happened next in the story, or it’s possible my mother never finished reading it to me, but I’ve always been very interested, not in finding the answer, but in the mystery of the journey.
VALHALLA RISING was my first non-contemporary movie, meaning I didn’t have a musical reference I could connect with since the film’s setting is 1000 AD. I knew I wanted to make a science fiction movie without science so it would have been odd to use conventional music. It wasn’t I was shooting the film that the idea of distortion came to my mind, specifically the distortion of a guitar. Having worked with Peter Peter and Peter Kyed on my previous PUSHER TRILOGY, we were very familiar with each other’s sensibilities and when I presented the idea of distortion as the sound we needed to hear first, combined with the noise of unearthliness, the musical genesis was created.
