The Andean pop of Colombia and Peru shares the shuffling, infectious rhythms of cumbia, but where the former uses accordion and big bands, the latter favours the twang of surf-rock guitars. Drawn from bands from cumbia's 70s glory years, the All Stars are Peru's own Buena Vista, reprising old hits with a still deft touch. The intricate melody lines of their shimmering Fender guitars, intertwined with clattering Latin percussion, remain a mesmeric force, whether on instrumentals such as Lobos al Escape, or on whooping vocal numbers such as La Primavera Triste. Cumbia hails from Colombia but has spread and the Cumbia All Stars are reviving the psychedelic sound of Peruvian cumbia from Lima. The eight members of the All Stars played in many of the top bands from the Seventies on and, thanks to crate-digging interest from European and American record labels, there s a new thirst for the music.
