A venerable institution in jazz saxophone circles: James Carter explains how he saw the original Quartet in Detroit in 1982, at the age of 13, and cherished a long-held dream ever since that he would one day play with the band. He was drafted in to replace Julius Hemphill in 1995, but David Murray and Hamiet Bluiett remain from the original line-up, and for this live recording (Berlin 2009) Kidd Jordan was brought in to replace Oliver Lake. Exquisite playing and a pervasive sense of fun are evident on this release - a must-buy for all sax fans.
