These 1959 performances come up sounding fresher and more dynamic than ever in the latest reissue. If Bernstein played the piano part in Rhapsody in Blue for kicks, he certainly knew how to get maximum cohesion from what is essentially a glorified improvisation with added orchestra. The opening clarinet is tastefully swung, while Bernstein caresses the "big tune" without loving it to death. American in Paris is Gershwin's off-stage masterpiece--a brilliant evocation of a tourist's encounters and emotions, encapsulated in tone poem format. Bernstein knits the episodic structure together seamlessly, and once again gets maximum heart --without schmaltz--from the nostalgic central theme. The NYPO give their all, still in the "honeymoon" period of their relationship at this stage. By comparison, Ferde Grofé's Grand Canyon Suite is strong on atmosphere but short on substance. No matter--Bernstein makes the most of "On The Trail"'s broad humour and clearly relishes "Cloudburst"'s graphic storm scene. An enjoyable filler and an attractive disc. --Richard Whitehouse
