What makes this album a cut above other Fifties era Hooker releases is the clear and intimate fidelity that was Atlantic's trademark. The Vee-Jay recordings may be more famous, but this collection is a solid sample of Hooker's strengths, with the added bonus of sounding like he's sitting right in front of you. This album must also have had a prominent place in Van Morrison's collection, as it's startling to hear Hooker sing "I got a home on high in another world," on the desolate title track, which Van would later echo on "Astral Weeks." There's also "Real Real Gone" which may or may not have inspired Van's song of the same name. ~Jason Schneider
