Dr. John, real name Malcolm John Rebennack Jr. November 21, 1940) is an American musician known for his eclectic approach to music. The main components of his music — an intricate mix of new Orleans Blues (and rhythm and Blues) with psychedelic rock, a kind of rumbling vocals in the spirit of Van Morrison and bright performances in the style of carnival Mardi Gras.
Mack Rebennack began in the late 1950s in New Orleans as a session musician (keyboardist and guitarist) under the pseudonym Night Tripper. Due to careless handling of firearms, he suffered a hand injury and was forced to give up performing with a guitar.
In the mid-1960s, the musician became interested in voodoo culture, drugs and psychedelia, changed his stage name to Dr. John, and moved to Los Angeles, where he continued to wear Mardi Gras costumes during performances. He became one of the most prominent figures in psychedelic music of those years. Recorded with Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, Mick Jagger and cher. In 1973, he released his most successful single, "Right Place Wrong Time".
In later years, Dr. John continued to take an eclectic approach to the music he performed. Even the most dedicated fans found his albums of the 1970s and 1980s to be very uneven. Although his early compositions were covered and reworked by the Allman Brothers Band, Noel Gallagher and Beck (on the track "Loser"), Dr. John himself in the 1990s mostly performed songs from the traditional repertoire of American pop music.
