Well isn’t this a pleasant sledgehammer to the face? Lower Than Atlantis, previously one of my favorite bands, has had a rough few years. After releasing one of the best English punk albums in recent memory with 2011’s World Record, the band didn’t take to success very well. The follow-up, 2012’s Changing Tune, was a definite disappointment and a sign that that World Record was the band’s peak. Changing Tune showcased a slicker, sleeker band who was embracing the bigger audience, but the songs were quite underwhelming. Fast forward to this self-titled release, and Lower Than Atlantis has not only met their previous standard; they’ve flat-out shattered any expectations. This is a truly wonderful exercise in properly maturing your sound with age, without compromising your integrity or abandoning previous fans.

You see, Lower Than Atlantis, above all things, is a perfect pop record. Sure, for a band who used to dabble in post-hardcore angst and punk anthems, this may seem like a problem; however, with Mike Duce’s staggeringly melodic voice, the sonic shift doesn’t really feel all that surprising. In fact, one of the best attributes of this album (and the few new songs on the re-released version) is how the band’s history feels like it informs its current success. “English Kids In America” couldn’t be more stadium ready, but with nifty guitar-work and a propulsive chorus, it recalls the more pensive portions of the band’s past work. “Live Slow Die Old” and “Damn Nation” tackle typical punk topics (youthful carelessness and religious hypocrisy), and both carry neat punk undertones and absolutely massive choruses. Sure, “Ain’t No Friend” feels like a dance number waiting to happen, but it deftly walks the line between bubblegum and heavy. Lower Than Atlantis understand how to properly balance their punk background and pop ambitions, and it’s why this release is so much damn fun.

Sure, it feels weird to heap so much praise on a re-release, but, hey, as someone who reviews mountains of music each year, I have a bad habit of skipping over anticipated or bigger albums that I don’t review. This is a great opportunity to discover why Lower Than Atlantis should be the biggest rock band in the world. These songs sound huge, but they’re also very clever in how the album is both extremely diverse and continually massive. No one writes such awesomely catchy choruses anymore. The British have been masters of excellent pop-rock for a while now (Don Broco, Mallory Knox, etc.), but Lower Than Atlantis, with this excellent album show why they are the standard-bearers.
