As the frontman for raucous U.K. indie rockers the View, Scotland's Kyle Falconer rose to national success with the release of his band's 2007 chart-topping debut, Hats Off to Buskers and its hit single, "Same Jeans." Following a decade of work with the band, he began a solo career with the release of 2018's No Thank You, further establishing himself as a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist.
Born in 1987 in Dundee, Scotland, Falconer was raised in the city's Dryburgh district by his mother after his father's death at a young age. While attending St. John's High School, he began playing in a cover band with fellow schoolmates Pete Reilly (guitar) and Kieren Webster (bass), as well as drummer Steven Morrison from nearby Harris Academy. Transitioning into an original band in 2005, the View soon signed with SonyBMG imprint 1965 Records and found near-immediate success upon the release of their 2007 debut, Hats Off to the Buskers, which entered the U.K. albums chart at number one and yielded several hits, including the single "Same Jeans." Behind Falconer's thick Scottish brogue and affinity for hooky, melodic rock, the View drew comparisons to bands like the Libertines and Oasis. While they failed to replicate their early success over subsequent albums, the band continued to grow artistically and maintained a solid fan base at home in Scotland.
Falconer's struggles with substance abuse remained a narrative throughout his career with the View, frequently landing him in hot water and, following a 2016 incident on a European Jet2 flight, into a stint in rehab in Thailand. Upon his return home, he felt inspired to begin work on his first-ever solo album. Spending much of 2017 at Paul Weller's Black Barn studio, Falconer combined his myriad of eclectic influences -- from the Beatles to Bonnie Raitt -- into a vibrant solo effort, playing nearly every instrument himself. Following a tour opening for Liam Gallagher, he released his solo debut, No Thank You, in 2018.
