Burt Bacharach - Isn't She Great (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (1999)

Fittingly, Burt Bacharach, Hal David, and Dionne Warwick reunited for this biopic of Valley of the Dolls author Jacqueline Susann; Warwick sang the 1967 Dolls movie's memorably broken theme song on the flip of "I Say a Little Prayer." The two new Bacharach-David songs here are nothing spectacular, though "On My Way" does recall Warwick's '60s glory days with the team. Bacharach's score, which fills most of the disc, is occasionally hampered by the bell-like synthesizer sounds that infected too much adult-contemporary pop in the '80s: at its worst, the music here seems more suited for Arthur 2 than a meditation on the great camp figure Susann. Still, the album is hardly a washout, and diehard fans will appreciate having some new ear candy on which to chew. -- Rickey Wright
