The music on this 2-disc set and its companion 'Vol 2' set is among the loveliest chamber music you can find anywhere, at least to my mind.
Most people know Faure for his gentle 'Requiem,' but anyone wanting to explore the melody-rich world of late 19th-century French Romanticism can't go wrong with these recordings.
All of this music is utterly non-flashy and breathtakingly beautiful, never cloying or oversweet like so many works of this period. Faure, an essentially old fashioned guy, was a consummate craftsman and an imaginative melodist.
I've known this music for some time, having had the LP versions from the late 70s, and I never tire of it. The pieces for violin and piano are particularly sublime, as is the elegaic Piano Trio in D minor. This isn't music to everyone's taste, admittedly, but anyone willing to give it some time will be serenely rewarded, believe me.
For anyone wanting to get to know this gentle artist and his delicate, lovely work, these chamber works are a great beginning. (I should add that Faure's solo piano music [especially that recorded by the Brit pianist Kathryn Stott] is also wonderful and rewarding. And, then there are the songs too [Elly Ameling and Gerard Souzay do them right!]).
