Billy Joe Shaver (born August 16, 1939) is a Texas country music singer and songwriter. Shaver's 1973 album Old Five and Dimers Like Me is a classic in the outlaw country genre.

The year 1999 was not the best of times for country renegade legend Billy Joe Shaver. He lost the three people he loved the most. His mother Victory Shaver & his wife Brenda Shaver died only three months apart from cancer. On New Year's Eve of 2000, Shaver's only son & long-time musical collaborator Eddy Shaver was found dead of a heroin overdose. At the time of his death, Eddy was at work on an untitled album that was only half completed. Operating from "visits & instructions" from Eddy, Shaver went ahead & finished the album. The resultant album, Billy & the Kid kicks off with a new song written by Shaver called "Fame" which is a sentimental look at how he & Eddy pursued their musical dream together. According to Shaver, "The album is full of love, talent & dedication with the tracks that Eddy left Tony & me to finish."
