This is a wonderful recording of Stenhammar's best works, save the Serendade album (also on BIS). The Interlude is the only part of Sången (the Song) ever recorded, and it is powerful. The orchestra introduces the piece as a single, forceful unit. Then in comes the brass, and the orchestra answers it; they then come together to produce a wonderful, spectral force of sound. Snofrid, Op. 5 is a an interesting choral work that should not be missed, and Midwinter, Op. 24 has a wonderful double-bass introduction, which is then added onto by cellos, then other strings a perfect third and an octave up, then in comes the bassoon, and so on... a kind of "bande" but much slower. And, be careful with the volume... what starts out to be quite soft really builds up! Enjoy!
