Over the course of 30+ years and eleven albums, the subdudes have quietly become one of America’s national music treasures.

The New Orleans-formed group is a living encapsulation of American music, a vibrant cauldron of sounds that stirs together meaty grooves and jazzy dynamics, soulful R&B swagger, easy vocal harmonies, cheeky rock ‘n’ roll attitude and folky social consciousness — not to mention some of the sharpest musicianship and ensemble playing you’ll ever hear from any four musicians.

Led by singer/guitarist Tommy Malone and accordionist, John Magnie, the subdudes draw most of their inspiration from the sounds of their native New Orleans, blending blues, gospel, funk, and R&B with their own harmony vocals; their sound is also notable for the band’s substitution of a tambourine player, Steve Amedée, for a drummer. Tim Cook rounds out the band on bass.

I, like many, am a longtime fan of this much treasured collection of musical souls, The subdudes. I can mark evolutions in my life by the sweet passions in each CD they issue. Lickskillet is, in my mind, an album which contains such a texture of musical ideas, nuanced harmonies, and life affirming lyrics that I'd have to say it will become one of the dude's most venerated. Sweet harmonies, some of which could be heard on New Jersey street corners in the 50's, sing a raucous affirmation of love and some are unabashed pure New Orleans funk, and all reaffirm the value of love and compassion. The arrangements...ah the arrangements. Tommy Malone's guitar has never been more pure of note, his vocals always expressive and truth telling, Magnie's and the other guys adding harmonic passion which is a signature of the subdudes. Hats off to the horn section arrangements, adding but not intruding, in the soulful essence of the songs. This one will be one of my favorites. Den Vadies Valparaiso, IN
