As a percussionist, Santiago Córdoba has been a pivotal member of Argentine tango futurists Violentango since they formed in 2004. Whilst that group continues to regularly tour around the world, he made his solo debut in 2015 with the spell-binding Corso, mapping out a musical universe that was still quintessentially Argentine but that was far removed from the tango. Pioneering folk icons like Atahualpa Yupanqui, Domingo Cura and Gustavo Leguizamon that turned Argentine music on its head became the musical guides for this project, but free jazz percussionists such as Billy Martin and Airto Moreira were just as important in setting a blueprint for a solo project that explores rhythms, textures and the relationship between music and identity in equal measures. Mainly instrumental, Santiago’s music lives in a unique meeting point between folk poetry, percussive psych rock and minimal electronica. When he’s not touring around Europe and Latin America, Santiago can be found between Berlin and Buenos Aires.
