ROMANTIC REVOLUTION
‘ROMANTIC REVOLUTION – bruckner unlimited’ – that was the name of the remix contest the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin (DSO) held in November 2015 in collaboration with otb medien. Producers from around the world were invited to access the sound building blocks of the Finale of Anton Bruckner’s Fourth Symphony, the so-called ‘Romantic’, giving the samples their own touch by late January 2016. The patron of the contest was the musician and producer Henrik Schwarz.
THE COMPETITION
Unlike the usual classical remix projects, existing recordings were not reprocessed for ‘ROMANTIC REVOLUTION – bruckner unlimited’; instead, for the contest the orchestra played twenty selected sound components from the Finale of Bruckner’s Fourth Symphony with the Estonian conductor Risto Joost at a special “recording session”. These were made available for free download at the project website romantic-revolution.com, and were intended to serve as a basis for individual pieces of a maximum length of twelve minutes. By consciously breaking the work up into its individual tracks, producers and musicians were able to understand its essence. In this way, the competition offered all participants the opportunity not only to “remix” or “re-arrange” but to appropriate the classical sound material and further process it in line with their own artistic vision.
An international jury whose members included, besides Henrik Schwarz, Norwegian singer-songwriter Kari Jahnsen aka Farao, Daniel Gerhardt, editor of the print magazine for pop culture ‘Spex’, Julian Weber, music editor of the German national newspaper ‘taz’, and Ris- to Joost, selected the winners: the first prize went to François Larini, who convinced the jury with his track ‘Mäßig bewegt’, second prize to Lambert Windges, third to Rabon Aibo with his co-producer Caccia- tore. Oscar Finch, after winning the third prize in 2014, is once again one of the winners; this time he has been awarded the fourth prize. Alexandre J. Maurer and Volker Bahmer tied for the fifth prize.
ARTISTS AND TRACKS
François Larini, a Frenchman living in London, is active as a curator and musician. He develops his sound projects under the pseudonym S/QU/NC/R. They are fed by the elements of field recording, improvisation, from bass tones and archive recordings in conjunction with personal stories and ethnographic sound documents. Larini is the co-founder of the electronic label ‘Bordille Records’. He says about his track ‘Mäßig bewegt’: “My aim was to underscore the sonic and structural characteristics of the Finale of Bruckner’s Fourth Symphony – for instance, the division into two parts, its considerable duration, the tension arising from dissonances and unprepared modulations, and the vital importance of winds and horns. I wanted to create a kind of post-Romantic gloomy soundscape, with a concentration on slowly unfolding textures, the vast expanse of space, coupled with low-frequency droning.” ...booklet
