In this project, Felix Ardanaz offers us a collection of some key works composed by the most emblematic composers belonging to the French harpsichord school: Louis Couperin, D’Anglebert, François Couperin, Louis Marchand, Jacquet de la Guerre, Jean Philippe Rameau, Antoine Forqueray and Jacques Duphly.

Couperin’s Pavane in F# minor opens the recital, introducing us to the tragic and moving atmosphere of one of the most iconic pieces of the “father” of the French Baroque school. The Prelude from D’Anglebert’s Suite nº3, on the other hand, is a wonderful example of the fantastic genre of “non measured preludes”, which has allowed the performers to have immense freedom.

The famous preludes’ compendium “L’art de toucher le clavecin” by François Couperin became the pedagogical manual of the French school’s conventions, something comparable to “The Well Tempered Clavier” by J.S. Bach in the German context. D minor Chaconne by Louis Marchand, with its audacious harmony and its repetitive character, depicts monumental style crowned by the improvised cadence of Felix Ardanaz.

Suite nº1 in D minor by Jacquet de la Guerre reminds us of the genuine personality of this female composer that embraced the Rococo style, and played for King Louis XIV when she was only four years old. On the other hand, La Dauphine by Jean Philippe Rameau is a short piece that explores the keybord from a new perspective, predicting the Viennese classicism: Ramea is considered by many musicologists the father of the modern piano technique.

Suite Nº5 in C minor by Antoine Forqueray, originally written for viola da gamba, is a milestone of the French harpsichord literature for its emotional background and its enormous technical complexity, especially visible in Jupiter (last piece from the Suite). The album ends with the piece “La de Drummond” by Jacque Duphly, wherein we clearly notice the texture of “Alberti” bass. With Duphly, deceased in 1789, the French Revolution started, auguring the end of the Ancient Regime, but also of the French Baroque era in harpsichord
