Apparemment, Koželuch avait ce que l’on appelle « une grande gueule » et n’hésitait pas à s’en prendre à ses contemporains, Mozart et Beethoven en tête – Beethoven qui le lui rendit bien, d’ailleurs. Bon, personne n’ira jamais affirmer que Koželuch est l’égal du génial sourd ; mais on peut quand même lui rendre justice et écouter ses symphonies, écrites entre les années 1785 et jusqu’au début du XIXe siècle, dans un langage viennois très en phase avec son temps, mais dont certaines tournures s’orientent malgré tout vers le premier Schubert. On lui connaît une trentaine de symphonies, ce qui n’est pas énorme lorsque l’on considère que son œuvre compte quelque quatre cents ouvrages. Outre des dizaines de concertos et sérénades, il a surtout écrit plus de soixante trios et autant de sonates pour piano, mais aussi des quantités impressionnantes de quatuors, ballets, Lieder, cantates ainsi que quelques opéras – assez peu, en ce qui concerne cette dernière forme. Voici enregistrées quatre de ses symphonies de la période 1785-1790, quand il jouissait d’une solide réputation à Vienne en tant que compositeur de talent. On remarquera en particulier une symphonie en sol mineur d’une grande force dramatique.
