In The Backyard Of Your Mind is a radiant, restless record, composed single-handedly but with the occasional help of the “Falling Angels”, his usual partners in crime: Mitch Pires (Married Monk, NLF3), Lori Chun (Berg Sans Nipple, Turzi, Herman Düne) as well as his brother F.Lor (Yann Tiersen, DirtyThree, Shannon Wright).
This intense mid-season resonates with zither-sounding guitars and brass swathes that soar and soon intertwine. And then Don Niño’s visceral voice emerges, a primal growl growing into a prophecy.
Once the songs were committed to tape in the gently awakening spring of 2011, Luke Sutherland – a novelist and currently active member of Scottish band Mogwai, as well as Don Niño’s old friend and kindred spirit – joined in to provide the album with a “celestial veneer”, adding
several layers of backing vocals and violins and imparting Don Niño’s sweet litanies with striking resonance.
On In The Backyard Of Your Mind, instinctive words mingle with the instrumental lines and electric freak-folk provides glimpses of a precious-wood kind of pop. From this dense and lush forest, two graceful panthers grin out at the masses.
“Cuckoo is a wink from the Forefathers” Don Niño slips in with a smile, before adding that In The Backyard Of Your Mind is in fact an animist album. And yes, his music is imbued with a non-religious form of mysticism, akin to a real psychedelic high: there lies the Realm of the Artist.
