It’s a singular coupling to frame Berg’s Four Pieces for Clarinet and Piano (1913) with the two Sonatas for the same formation by Brahms, Op. 120, written only nineteen years earlier, in 1894. The distance seems impassable, except if… except if you want to see in Berg’s language a dark, fleeting and passionate romanticism, despite some harshness in his discourse; and in Brahms’ language a projection of so many things to come, whose inevitability was probably foreseen by the old composer. The clarinetist Jérôme Comte and his accomplice Denis Pascal at the piano play these two composers as if they were contemporaries of each other and, in the end, the logic distills itself as you listen. For the record, Jérôme Comte-a disciple of Pascal Moragues and of Maurice Bourgue-entered the Ensemble Intercontemporain as a soloist at only 25, an undeniable consecration for this multi-talented musician, both eclectic and cultivated. He now teaches at the Conservatoire de Paris… the future is thus in safe hands.
