Unlike most American Idol winners, Lee already had a career as a performer prior to winning. As a result he was able to continue his recording career with Vanguard Records after his Idol moment. His creation "Blackbird Song" was featured in an episode of the popular television series The Walking Dead and he has appeared as an actor in such horror films as Circling The Drain and Deadscapes: Broken Road.
