Two noble rivals, a wicked conspirator, a heroic woman: Die Räuberbraut brought Ferdinand Ries, already a famous figure across Europe, unforeseen success in 1828. The operatic debut of the Bonn-born composer was staged in numerous German cities and in Paris, Amsterdam and London. Posterity remembers Ries as pupil and biographer of Beethoven. »The Robber Bride« shows, however, that he could write very effectively for the stage. And the vigorously applauded performance with the WDR Symphony Orchestra fully conveys his intentions. Howard Griffith had the art of bringing out the rich colours of Ries's music vividly and robustly, with admirable assistance from the WDR Choir. The high-calibre solo ensemble was led by Ruth Ziesak (Laura), whose soprano »has stayed remarkably youthful while always able to ratchet up the drama.« That was Christoph Zimmermann's verdict on the concert performance in Cologne that preceded our recording.
