A première vue, Nick Cave, Anna Calvi, Steve Earle, Tom McRae, Adrian Utley de Portishead, Roger Waters, Ed Harcourt et Brian Eno, pour n’en citer que huit, ne se déplacent que très rarement ensemble sur un même disque. Sans doute que l’auteur du disque en question incarne un champ magnétique des plus puissant… Pour son vingtième album, Marianne Faithfull s’est donc joliment entourée, tant dans l’écriture que dans la réalisation. Casting éclectique et méchamment goûtu donc pour un enregistrement kaléidoscopique au cœur duquel brille son inimitable organe rauque, identifiable dès les premières notes et qui, malgré l’empreinte appuyée du temps, fait toujours son petit effet dévastateur et hypnotique. L’écrin est, au choix, chambriste ou prophétique. Le menu, original et neuf ou constitué de reprises bien vues (Everly Brothers, Leonard Cohen). Et l’ensemble, une belle œuvre d’art total, souvent sombre, dans laquelle on plonge corps et âme. Magnifique.
