When Charles Burney came to Vienna in 1772, he asked what great musicians except. Hasse, Gluck and Wagenseil Vienna still had to offer. Such a reputation had the imperial court composer and court piano master Georg Christoph Wagenseil (1715-1777) during his lifetime. Unfortunately, as with so many of our contemporaries today, that has changed. The shadows of Haydn and Mozart obscure much that once stood in the bright light.
Our cpo preclassic edition has probably brought so many valuable to light!

Wagenseil was certainly the most important representative of Viennese musical life before the great period of Viennese Classicism. As a personal music teacher of Maria Theresia, he was influential in shaping the musical taste of the court. But also in London and Paris his works - and especially the symphonies - were greatly appreciated and successfully relocated.

Michi Gaigg has now recorded 5 of these magnificent Sturm und Drang works for us with her L'Orfeo Baroque orchestra, and a new jewel in the crown of pre-classical music becomes visible.
In our referenceable recording even with Viennese local color, when the harpsichord is replaced by an unusual dulcimer (nomen non est omen!).
