Great Gentlemen of Song, Vol. 2 is Capitol's sequel to a star-studded collection of male vocalists who achieved notoriety during a golden age of nightclub singers that dawned at the end of the Second World War and lasted roughly until the emergence of Jim Morrison and Captain Beefheart (1945-1966). Along with their dolled up female counterparts, carefully coiffed men who sang conventional pop tunes were America's entertainment staples during these years. Quite a few of the guys on Vol. 2 appeared already on Hooray for Love: Great Gentlemen of Song, Vol. 1; additions to the roster are big-voiced Louis Prima, Argentine-born Dick Haymes, archetypal groaner Bing Crosby, and authentic jazz singers Billy Eckstine, Joe Williams, and Mark Murphy. This charming compendium of mainstream popular entertainment (laced with jazzy residuum) is guaranteed to irradiate any tryst or cocktail party with its mannered masculinity and suave sophistication.
