Valtakunnallinen Esko Linnavalli Big Band -sävellyskilpailu Suomen Big Band -yhdistys, Imatra Big Band Festival ja UMO Jazz Orchestra järjestävät joka toinen vuosi Esko Linnavalli Big Band -sävellyskilpailun Imatra Big Band -festivaalilla. Kilpailun tarkoituksena on nostaa esille uuden big band -musiikin tekijöitä sekä osaltaan tukea uuden musiikin säveltämistä ja esittämistä. Sävellyskilpailu lanseerattiin alkamaan vuonna 2005 ja se tekee kunniaa UMO Jazz Orchestran perustajajäsenelle ja kapellimestarille, Esko Linnavallille, jon- ka kausi orkesterin taiteellisena johtajana kesti vuodesta 1975 vuoteen 1991. Linnavallia pidetään yhtenä UMO:n merkittävimmistä kapellimestareista, sillä hänen ansiostaan UMO:sta kehittyi kan- sainvälisesti tunnustettu jazzorkesteri sekä pysyvä instituutio Suomen musiikkielämässä. Kilpailu käydään kahdessa vaiheessa siten, että esikarsinnassa mukaan valitaan 10 teosta, jotka esitetään fnaalissa Imatra Big Band -festivaalilla. Säveltäjät osallistuvat kilpailuun anonyymisti ja siksi teosten säveltäjät yleisölle selviävät vasta palkintojenjaon yhteydessä. Tämä levy sisältää vuosien 2005, 2007 ja 2009 kilpailujen palkitut teokset, yhteensä 10 kappaletta. Competition Winners – Esko Linnavalli Big Band composing contest 2005–2009 Esko Linnavalli Big Band composing contest is arranged every other year at Imatra Big Band Festival by Big Band Association of Finland, Imatra Big Band Festival and UMO Jazz Orchestra. The purpose of the contest is to bring new big band composers to the fore and support the creation and presentation of new music. The contest has been arranged since 2005, when it was founded to salute the founding member and conductor of UMO Jazz Orchestra, late Esko Linnavalli. This record includes all of the award-winning compositions throughout the history of the contest. Sibis Big Band, founded 2007, is Sibelius Academy’s own big band. The musicians of the band are mostly students of Jazz Music Department, but also students from other Sibelius Academy’s departments and Metropolia University of Applied Sciences have been playing in the band alongside with professional musicians. Trombonist and conductor Antti Rissanen works as a lecturer at Jazz Music Department of Sibelius Academy. He has also been the conductor of Sibis Big Band since 2007. Rissanen has worked with several different big bands and symphony orchestras, such as UMO Jazz Orchestra, Vantaa POPS Orchestra and "George Garanian" Moscow Big Band.
