When M-G-M’s Silk Stockings opened at Radio City Music Hall in July of 1957, famed New York Times film critic Bosley Crowther began his review with the following proclamation: “There should be legislation requiring that Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse appear together in a musical picture at least once every two years. Previously they were together in The Band Wagon, and the world was brightened. That was way back in 1953. Now they are together in Silk Stockings, and somebody should declare a holiday.” The film went on to earn mostly enthusiastic reviews and a significant profit at the box office, but Mr. Crowther’s plea was not taken to heart. Silk Stockings was one of the last hurrahs of the once-glorious M-G-M musical and would turn out to be the final appearance for both Astaire and Charisse as stars of that very spe- cial motion-picture genre.
