The Byrds - Never Ever Before (1994)

Alternate or in-progress takes of fifteen early Byrds songs, most or all from 1965 (the last two, "Eight Miles High" and "Why," may have been recorded in either late 1965 or early 1966). This bootleg is only for serious Byrds buffs, since the alternates aren't too different from the officially released versions, and since these sometimes consist only of instrumental backing tracks, or brief fragments that break down shortly after the intro. If you are a Byrds fanatic with a taste for a scholarly look at the evolution of some of their early songs, it's pretty interesting, especially as the sound quality is top-notch. Some of this appears on other bootlegs, like In the Studio and the for-lunatics-only nine-CD Journals, but some does not. Highlights include complete alternates of "It's No Use" and "We'll Meet Again," the latter of which has a significantly different vocal approach, and an alternate of "Eight Miles High" that has a much longer guitar solo.
