This album offers two sonatas and the second Récréation in tribute to Leclair as we commemorate the 250th anniversary of his death. At the age of sixty-seven, he was murdered in front of the house he had purchased in a dangerous neighborhood of Paris. There is no question that the musical world admired Leclair but there is little evidence that it loved him. He was unable to share power at court with colleagues and left. His marriage to Louise Roussel, one of France’s finest music engravers, ended in rupture, and evidence suggests that he was murdered at the hand of a disgruntled nephew. But today, two and a half centuries having set us at a safe distance from difficult aspects of his personality, we can enjoy the considerable charm that Leclair displayed in his beautifully crafted and thoroughly entertaining music.

'...One selling point of this nicely-produced album is Charles Brink’s transverse flute playing, melding flexible agility with a gorgeous range of colors. It’s not easy making a flute sound this expressive. Leclair’s output is dominated by dance music, in harpsichordist Andrew Appel’s words “bringing to life the court minuet and gavotte, as well as the barn dance performed by wooden-shoed peasants.” These performances brim with terpsichorean bounce. The players understand exactly how to use ornamentation, the solo lines frequently elaborated almost to breaking point without ever becoming wearisome.' (Graham Rickson, The Arts Desk)
