EDITORS’ NOTES
French singer Francoise Hardy was one of the finest singers of the 1960s and onward. Her even-handed delivery managed to keep her emotions in check despite the fact that she fancied rainy Parisian days and songs where lovers are always leaving for far shores. This 1968 collection is another brilliantly arranged set with inspired covers such as Leonard Cohen’s “Suzanne” (before it became a constant staple everywhere), Phil Ochs’ “There But for Fortune” (“Où va la chance?”) and Serge Gainsbourg’s “L’anamour.” Hardy’s own compositions are in shorter supply, but no less entrancing. “A quoi ça sert?” begins sparely before wrapping itself up in a smooth orchestration. “La mer, les etoiles et le vent” flows like a gentle stream and reaches imaginative heights in under two minutes. French isn’t just the language of love but a language of fantastic musicality. A listener need not understand the words to know that the overall effect is one of great seduction and pleasure.
